The takeover

The National Portrait Gallery houses over 220,000 works of art, yet only 31 of these are portraits of black women. This stark disparity inspired me to take action and create something monumental that would contribute to changing this narrative.

  • In this project, I have taken iconic paintings from renowned artists such as Matisse, Manet, and Renoir, and reimagined them by painting black female portraits over the originals. This artistic takeover aims to highlight the absence of black women in historical and classical art, asserting that art belongs to everyone.

By merging classic masterpieces with contemporary representation, I strive to challenge and expand the traditional boundaries of art history. This project not only celebrates black female beauty and identity but also underscores the importance of inclusivity in the art world.
